Fans of the sword and shield drama The Last Kingdom won’t have to wait much longer for season 3, as Netflix announces the series will launch this November in both the U.S. and the U.K. The third season will also have two additional hours, upping the usual episode count from eightto ten. That will likely be welcome news for fans of the series, as it makes the switch from BBC Two and BBC America to a Netflix exclusive series.
Based on The Saxon Stories, by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom follows the story of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) and works in the tradition of History’s Vikings, using real history as the backdrop to a fictionalized storyline. The series takes an unflinching but still appealing look at the hardscrabble lives of late 9th century kingdoms, as they fight for survival against invading Vikings (oddly enough), while also working to build a future for themselves.
